Basically trying to get the equivalent of a digital raw file (from a digital camera) for archiving from my scan then make copies / adjustments, but always have the raw scan to go back and work on again later. My thought was to try to get as good a raw scan as possible, and then do any adjustment / touch ups in Photoshop. I tend to use SilverFast for color and VueScan for black and white. It also doesnt support ProPhotoRGB which is the native color space used by Lightroom.

VUESCAN VS SILVERFAST UPGRADE

I have gotten Nikon scan installed and working on windows 10 ( a challenge there) but don't know if I should use that, or use VueScan, or Silverfast (I dont own either of those at the moment but it wouldn't be a big deal to buy them. SilverFast does a better job with dust removal and color balance, but my version is limited to 8/24 bit images, there is a hefty upgrade fee to get 16/48 bit TIFFs. and not have to go back and redo stuff later. I want to go back and start scanning a bunch of my better pictures at least, but if i am going to start a big archiving project, I want to do it once. It's mostly been packed away all this time after a few experimental scans. In my own tests, I am finding that both the software mentioned above did nothing which the NikonScan could not do (although my tests were not scientific). Back in 2007, when I first got into digital photography, i decided to get a scanner to scan my old film negatives (and also so my dad could scan his large collection of slides). There seems to be a consensus that VueScan and SilverFast are better than NikonScan.
